Above is our library of gearhead to gearbox installation PDFs. Typically what we see in industry is a horizontal mounting of servo gear heads on the machine itself. Because of this, it may be more natural for technicians to want to take the mount the motor and mount in a horizontal orientation, but this is not ideal.

When you take a look at the individual components that have to mate together, they are machine components. You have a machined pilot on the motor and you have the corresponding machine bore and flange on the gearbox. These are machine components meaning they have tolerance fields when they are produced. In the motor side you have a minus-tolerance, so a specific diameter and they can be smaller associated with a tolerance field.

Conversely the pilot-bore can be larger associated with its tolerance field. If these are manufactured at the extreme of their tolerances, they can be in spec but when you mount them together horizontally you are guaranteeing maximum misalignment because the motor will naturally want to go to the bottom of the corresponding bore in the flange. Therefore you are increasing some of the loads associated with lateral misalignment in this orientation, which shortens the life of the overall components.
