When a heavy-duty lifting, pushing, pulling, and positioning system fails, excessive loads or the operating cycles are often the first to take the blame. However, the more common cause is contaminated grease.
In screw jacks that use a shared lubrication cavity, debris, metal wear particles, and moisture from the spindle circulates back into the gearing. The result is accelerated wear and unplanned downtime.
Cross-Contamination Can Damage Gearboxes
In a shared-cavity design, lubricant moves between the drive components and the lifting spindle. The spindle, however, is exposed to the outside environment. Even with bellows in place, bellows and seals can wear or fail without warning.
Once abrasive particles reach the spindle threads, a shared system carries them straight into the worm gear mesh and gearbox bearings. That starts a cycle of friction, heat, and progressive component damage.
How Separate Lubrication Works in a Screw Jack
Separate lubrication means the gearbox and the spindle each have an independent lubrication cavity, so grease never travels between them.
Contaminants that enter the spindle area stay there, and the gear set and bearings stay clean.
Avoid Cross-Contamination by Separating Gearbox and Spindle Cavities
- Dedicated spindle cavity. Whether the jack uses a trapezoidal (Tr) or ball screw (KGT) spindle, the spindle and nut have their own lubrication zone. Engineers can choose the best grease for the spindle without compromising the gearbox lubricant.
- Sealed gearbox cavity. The gearbox is sealed and filled with a synthetic or fluid grease, depending on the version. ZIMM gearboxes ship standard with food-grade grease rated for -20°C to 150°C (-4°F to 302°F), and other greases and synthetic oils are available for different temperature ranges and environments. If a bellows or spindle seal fails, the gear set and bearings are still protected.
Key Advantages of Separate Lubrication
No cross-contamination
Debris and wear particles from the spindle can’t circulate into the gearbox.
Lubricant for each cavity
Each cavity can use the grease best suited to its job, such as synthetic high-performance grease for the spindle and a food-grade option for the gearbox
Easy Maintenance
Dedicated accessible lubrication ports allow easy re-lubrication without disassembly (recommended about every 5 years)
Longer Service Life
Clean gearing is less exposed to abrasive wear, reducing unplanned stops and extending the life of the system.
Built for Demanding Applications
From bottling lines and scissor tables to conveying applications and heavy material handling, ZIMM screw jacks offer modular configurations, precise positioning, and rugged construction. For added protection, SIFA safety nuts monitor drive nut wear, so worn components can be replaced before they become a safety risk or cause downtime.
